About Us

Founded in 1983 as one the first centers of its kind, the Institute has pioneered education and research on nonprofits and philanthropy. Research, publications, and conferences have addressed philanthropy by ethnic minorities, improvement of nonprofit management education, board leadership and nonprofit integrity, improving data on the nonprofit sector, information technology in the nonprofit sector, women and power in the nonprofit sector, Latino and Asian-American participation in the sector, and more.

Education The Institute supports degree and certificate programs in Nonprofit Administration offered by the College of Professional Studies at the University of San Francisco. Curriculum materials are offered, free of charge, to faculty at other institutions through the Teaching Resource Center.

Research at the Institute on nonprofits and philanthropy has appeared in books, articles, reports, conferences, the Internet, and the press. Current research priorities include the effects of growing cultural diversity on giving and volunteering, characteristics of the nonprofit sector in California, effects of demographic changes on the sector, and nonprofit uses of information technology.

Events and conferences at the Institute of interest to researchers and nonprofit professionals.

Publications from the Institute include research on philanthropy in communities of color, Latinos and the nonprofit sector, women and power in the nonprofit sector, new directions in nonprofit management education, giving and volunteering in California, statistical profiles of the nonprofit sector in California, and roles of religious congregations in welfare reform.

Alumni of USF Master of Nonprofit Administration degree and certificate programs occupy a wide range of leadership and key management positions. Alumni are invited to share information and participate in programs offered by the Institute in collaboration with the USF Nonprofit Administration Alumni Society.

Donors support the work of the Institute with gifts, grants, and earned revenue. We are grateful for financial support from alumni, other donors, and grant-makers.
