INOM is a research and educational institute devoted to the nonprofit and philanthropic sector. Staff’s academic disciplines and professions include sociology, education, social work, public policy analysis, and community organizing. Staff substantive, program, and policy specialties include nonprofit management education, nonprofit governance, strategic planning, nonprofit housing and common interest developments, immigration, Latino nonprofits and philanthropy, nonprofit lobbying and advocacy, mental health research, poverty, and urban studies.

Kathleen is the director of the USF Institute for Nonprofit
Organization Management and program director for the Master of Nonprofit
Administration (MNA) degree program. She has been a consultant and
researcher in nonprofit management for over 25 years. Kathleen has taught
courses on nonprofit governance and strategic planning in the MNA program
since 1986 and also teaches nonprofit governance at the Haas School of
Business, UC Berkeley. Her research activities have included studies on
board/executive relations, ethnic diversity on nonprofit boards, and
nontraditional board structures and practices. She holds a BA in History
from UCLA, an MPA degree with emphasis in nonprofit management from USF,
and a doctorate in education from USF.

Carol J. Silverman

Carol Silverman serves as Research Director for the Institute. She has a number of current interests, including: peoples’ biographies of civic engagement – how does their involvement change over time in response to specific events and changes in their own lives; strategies to promote homeownership for moderate income households using the mutual benefit form; the dual role of intra- and extra-organizational factors in facilitating the use of technology by small nonprofits; and a statistical portrait of the nonprofit sector in California. Her past research at the Institute has included work looking at the interest of the Faith Community in Charitable Choice funding, the role of religion in giving and volunteering, and economic stressors affecting arts organizations.

Carol received her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley. Trained as an urban sociologist with a strong background in both qualitative and quantitative sociology, she also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in mental health research. She has conducted housing policy research for the state of California and served as the Co-Principal Investigator on several NIH studies of the effectiveness of mental health services by agencies founded by ex-patients.

Arleda Martinez

Arleda acts as both Research Assistant and Grants Manager for the Institute. As Research Assistant, she has extensive experience in organizing the design, printing, mailing, tracking, and data input tasks of survey administration. As Grants Manager, Arleda has responsibility for overseeing all Institute project budgets, and ensuring that all financial and reporting requirements are met in a timely and accurate manner.

Arleda holds a BA in Humanities from New College of California and has worked for nonprofits and research institutes throughout her career.
